KUALA LUMPUR: Some villagers today caught a thief while he was attempting to steal some cash from a surau (mosque) at Kampung Mulia, in Sungai Tiram, Johor.
Before handing him to the police about 10am, the villagers bathed him in the dead washing room at the surau like a dead corpse, Sinar Harian reported.
The villagers have also shared the bathing of the suspect on social media, which went viral.
When contacted by the Malay daily, the Surau At-Taqwa deputy chairman Ramle Ahmat said the bathing of the suspect in the dead wash room was “to serve as a lesson to the culprit and others.”
Based on the surau’s closed-circuit television (CCTV), the 26-year-old suspect attempted to break in “to steal from the petty cash but failed,” Seri Alam police chief Superintendent Ismail Dollah told the Malay daily.
The suspect will be brought to court to be remanded and investigated under Section 380/511 of the Penal Code.
