KUALA LUMPUR: The UMNO Supreme Council (MKT) in its meeting on Friday decided to appeal for the consideration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to grant a full royal pardon to former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
UMNO Secretary General, Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said, UMNO will submit the appeal to Yang di-Pertuan Agong as it is in line with the provision in Article 42(1) Federal Constitution.
“The MKT had received a memorandum from 191 Divisions including Wanita, Youth, and Puteri wings that requested for the MKT to defend the former UMNO president and prime minister who had contributed greatly to the nation and the people.
“MKT on consensus had agreed to have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to present the appeal letter together with the memorandum that was signed by the whole UMNO leadership from the 191 Divisions including Wanita, Pemuda, and Puteri wings, ” Asyraf said in a statement after the MKT meeting as quoted by UMNO Online.
In the statement, Asyraf also mentioned that MKT took note of the disappointment and anxiety of the UMNO members at the grassroots level on the decision that was viewed as unfair.
“The Federal Court had decided to dismiss the application of Datuk Seri Najib Razak to review his conviction regarding the SRC case.
“This is in line with the statement of judgment from the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Abdul Rahman Sebli who chaired a five-member bench of the Federal Court that said Najib was not accorded a fair hearing and that the latter should be freed and acquitted,” Asyraf said.
