KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO Vice President Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wants Putrajaya to remain in the hands of UMNO as it has been the leading party in the government over 60 years.
Zahid said, UMNO is not only a superior political party in the country but also in the region and globally.
“UMNO has undergone many challenges in the past, nevertheless until today the party is still successful and becomes the leading party in the government,” said Ahmad Zahid at the joint opening of the party wings –Wanita, Youth and Puteri at Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) on Tuesday evening.
He added, UMNO strives for people of all races and is the pillar of Barisan Nasional (BN). It also shares power with its coalition partners not only in the peninsula but also Sabah and Sarawak.
Ahmad Zahid who is also Deputy Prime Minister said, there is an initiative from irresponsible groups outside that want “Sabah for Sabah and Sarawak for Sarawak” which is against the spirit of the Federal Constitution.
“The group that sparks fire to create instability in the country should be punished severely. We will not allow this to happen. In fact the people from both states want the Federal Government to lead them,” he added.
He said, only people with bankrupt ideas will allow themselves to be manipulated and be trapped in that “political game.”
Ahmad Zahid emphasized UMNO is still strong and relevant compared to other political parties.
“We practice political universality like how UMNO President and all of us went to Penang to help the flood victims. I am colour blind in matters relating to religion, humanity, education and safety,” he reiterated.
He was referring to Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng who contacted him at 3.30am asking for help with flood evacuees.
Zahid also said, a political unity requires a strong spirit and this is the recipe for political universality and must be passed down to the party members.
Meanwhile Ahmad Zahid wants all party members from the three wings to start meeting the people at the grassroot level to explain the need for UMNO and BN to win in the 14th General Election.
“We not only want to retain UMNO seats but to get back those seats that we have lost in the 13th General Election. We want to get more than two-third majority in the coming General Election,” Ahmad Zahid said.
