KUALA TERENGGANU: There is a possibility of UMNO and PAS to form a coalition of opposition parties in future when the existing collaboration between the two is being elevated.

UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, the coalition will be formed possibly towards the next general election as further discussions will be held between the two parties.

“Right now we have made an understanding with PAS that we should work together to address issues of common interest such as the rights of the Malays and Islam,” he said in a press conference after attending the 64th Muktamar Pas here on Saturday.

Ahmad Zahid added, at the moment the collaboration is only about working together as members of the opposition and added that PAS leaders have been invited to attend UMNO General Assembly at the end of this month.

Meanwhile, PAS President, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said, the collaboration between PAS and UMNO if it were to be materialised will be implemented through ‘tahaluf siyasi’ concept that is collaborating with any other movements whose ultimate objective/struggle is not Islam.

However he said, the collaboration will be decided by Syura Ulama Council that will study whether its implementation will meet the basic struggle and policy of PAS according to the “syarak” (Islamic procedures).

“The status of collaboration between the two parties that will complement with each other as expected by the “rakyat” has yet to be finalised,” he said after officiating the 64th Annual PAS Meeting at the Terengganu Sports Complex, Gong Badak, here on Saturday.

In another development, MIC Deputy President, Datuk Seri SK Devamany said, the party leadership has agreed to work with PAS.

He said, the party is willing to work with anybody who have “Bangsa Malaysia” spirit for the national development, wealth sharing and political cooperation.

“Our presence at the Muktamar was to express MIC’s intention to cooperate with PAS for a better and prosperous Malaysia,” said to the local media.-Malaysia World News
