KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO Deputy President, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (Tok Mat) said, if possible the party’s top post should not be contested in the UMNO’s internal polls following the defeat of UMNO in the recent 15th General Election.
Mohamad said, after the defeat in the general election, it is best for the president’s post and others not to be contested.
“No contest is the best way to avoid a split in the party,” he said to reporters after the launch of UMNO’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the World Trade Center (WTC) in Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday.
However he said, he has no issues if anyone wants to contest for the post as UMNO has always practiced democracy and no longer need a quota to contest for the top posts.
“It is much easier now. A person can contest if he/she has a proposer and a seconder,” he said.
Regarding UMNO’s preparation for the upcoming state elections, Mohamad Hasan said, a committee will be set up to look into its machinery and strategies including getting feedbacks from UMNO leadership on the need to collaborate with other parties.
Mohamad said, UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) has yet to decide whether to collaborate with other coalitions such as Pakatan Harapan (PH).
“The committee is needed now to get views from all relevant parties in preparing to face the election in six states this year.
“The committee is to be formed to look into the best paths the party should take to face the fights in the state elections,” he said to the media after officiating the Wanita UMNO, Youth and Puteri General Assemblies held at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Center, Wednesday. –Malaysia World News
