Featuring over 400 universities, the QS Asia University Rankings 2018 highlights the best universities in this region. Two universities from Singapore lead the way at the top of this year’s Asia University Rankings.

The Singapore-based university has climbed two places since last year, overtaking the National University of Singapore which now slips to second place. There’s also a changing of the guard in Hong Kong, with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology climbing one place to third, while the University of Hong Kong falls to fifth.

Elsewhere, Tsinghua University in sixth place is China’s leading institution. The only newcomer in this year’s top 10 is also Chinese; Fudan University has risen from 11th to seventh.

Japan’s top university continues to be the University of Tokyo (ranked 13th).

Malaysia has enjoyed a particularly strong year despite not being represented in the top 10, with three universities breaking into the top 50. Universiti Malaya (UM) was ranked number 25, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was ranked number 46, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia number 49. This year’s ranking features over 400 universities and was compiled by assessing universities across 10 different indicators including the proportion of academic staff qualified to PhD level and the proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students at the university.

Ben Sowter, Research Director, QS, said: “This year’s rankings suggest that, in a number of nations, established hierarchies are being disrupted. This is a result of the region’s universities continually striving to become competitive, forward-thinking, and internationally attractive.”
