PETALING JAYA: The death of a Sarawakian teenager who killed herself moments after uploading a post on social media (Instagram) has raised argument all over the world.

The teen had reportedly posted on the Instagram poll, “Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L” few moments before she jumped to her death.

According to online news portal Astro Awani, Padawan district police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the teenager had conducted the voting via Instagram.

“As many as 69% of the teenager’s followers on Instagram had supported the decision for her to kill herself via a poll which was uploaded at around 3pm yesterday,” Aidil said.

Following the incident, the UK Parliament on Wednesday questioned Instagram company about the poll.

According to The Star, Instagram responded to critics that it has put in place measures to prevent self-harm and suicide, but admitted the difficulty of detecting such posts due to the different ways people express themselves.

Instagram head of product Vishal Shah told Bri¬tish lawmakers that they were looking at whether policy changes were needed, BBC reported.

The platform has in place a mechanism to detect self-harm thoughts and seeks to remove certain posts while offering support where app¬ropriate, he said.

Instagram Asia Pacific communications head Wong Ching Yee said measures had been taken to provide users with suicide prevention tools and information. These included how to report content, get support for a friend or contact experts for help.

“We want those struggling with mental health issues to be able to access support on Instagram when and where they need it,” she said.
The platform also works with experts to give people the tools and information they need while using the app, such as how to report content or get support for friends they are concerned about, she said.

“In Malaysia, we work with Befrienders KL,” she said in e-mail

The 16-year-old teenager was believed to have thrown herself from the third floor of a shop lot in Kuching. Investigation on the cause of her suicide is still going on.
