SEREMBAN: UMNO Deputy President, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said, the rationale for declaring a state of emergency by the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is only to manage the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, he added, the government must ensure that the principles of human rights and the rule of law continue to be maintained throughout the emergency period until August 1

“Throughout the emergency period, we hope that the principles of human rights, civil liberties, transparency and the rule of law must be maintained.

“Efforts must be made to immediately restore and restore the function of the Constitution and the practice of parliamentary democracy to its original place, “he said in a statement posted on his Facebook today.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah toda
yesterday consented to the emergency implementation until August 1 or until an earlier date if the positive Covid-19 pandemic positive case numbers can be controlled and lowered effectively.

Prime Minister clarified today that the Emergency declaration invoked by the government is not a military coup, nor will there be any curfew.

He said the government will continue to perform its functions as usual.

In a joint statement, opposition Pakatan Harapan leaders opposed Muhyiddin’s rationale and reasons that emergency power was needed to curb Covid-19 and save Malaysians.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should not hide behind Covid-19 and burden the rakyat with a state of emergency  when he has lost majority support in the parliament, said Harapan.

“Muhyiddin’s action to propose an emergency when he has lost the support of the majority of MPs, including from Machang and Padang Rengas, is not acceptable at all.

“Do not hide behind Covid-19 and burden the people with a declaration of emergency for the sake of saving yourself,” the Harapan leaders added.

The Harapan leaders also raised concern that the emergency would not help in reviving the economy and boost the confidence of the investors, nor would it address the unemployment issue.

Many other critics labelled the emergency declaration move as Muhyiddin’s attempt to prevent the PN government from collapsing should more Umno MPs withdraw their support for him. -Malaysia World News
