KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand and Cambodia secretariats met and discussed on several critical issues at Wisma Perwira, Defence Ministry on Monday to ensure the border dispute between the two countries can be resolved and the ceasefire process is observed without delay.

Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Mohd. Nizam said the outcome of the secretariat meeting would be brought to the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled on 7 August 2025 involving 54 representatives from both countries led by their respective defence ministers and armed forces chiefs.

“The Malaysian side has also ensured that the Interim Defence Attache’ Monitoring Team has been deployed at the relevant border areas. We have facilitated all necessary arrangements for the delegations from both countries throughout their stay here,” he said after meeting with heads of both secretariats as quoted by NST.

Nizam stressed that it is impossible and rare in any ceasefire process for hostilities to stop immediately the next day after an announcement is made. There is always a cooling down period. Current efforts are focused on the ceasefire process at the border.

According to the Armed Forces Chief, from the meeting it was seen that both countries have strong commitment to halt the ongoing conflict at the border. Both sides want to achieve peace following the recent tensions.

“Regarding this, Malaysia has drafted the terms of reference which have been submitted to the Thai and Cambodian delegations and are now being reviewed.

“We also discussed the proposed establishment of ASEAN Monitoring Team (AMT) including its operational scope and location in detail. Malaysia in its capacity as an observer is also assessing potential support from major powers including the United States and China in the peace process,” he said.
