KUALA LUMPUR: The Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah will become the sixth Sultan of Pahang on January 15 as announced by Tengku Muda Pahang Tengku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah.
The announcement was made at Istana Abu Bakar in Pekan, Pahang today (January 12.)
Tengku Abdullah’s installation as the Sultan of Pahang would pave the way for him to be one of the candidates for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The selection of the next King has been discussed greatly after Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan stepped down as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on January 6.
After the Sultan of Kelantan, the next in line in the rotation of the nine Malay Rulers are the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan of Johor and Sultan of Perak respectively.
The Keeper of the Ruler’s Seal Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said the next King would take his oath of office on January 31, as reported by StarOnline.
Prior to the announcement, an amendment was made to the state (Pahang) constitution to empower the Royal Council to pave the way for Pahang Regent Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah to ascend the throne.
According to Tengku Abdul Rahman ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah, Pahang is facing an unusual challenge.
“My father is undergoing intensive medical treatment. It is with sadness that my family and I accept the reality that my father can no longer shoulder the responsibility of being a ruler.
“Realising this, my family and I proposed that our brother, the Regent of Pahang be appointed his successor and the sixth Sultan of Pahang,” Tengku Abdul Rahman said at a press conference at Istana Abu Bakar, Pekan today (Jan.12).
He added, Tengku Abdullah also ordered Sultan Ahmad Shah be named as Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah. –Malaysia World News.
