Sungai Bakap by-election: Contest between Dr. Joohari Ariffin (PH) and Abidin Ismail (PN)

NIBONG TEBAL: The candidate nomination centre for the Sungai Bakap State Constituency by-election at the Dewan Serbaguna Jawi on Saturday witnessed only two candidates had arrived early morning.

At 9.30am the two candidates who arrived were Dr. Joohari Ariffin from the Unity Government (PH) and Abidin Ismail from the Perikatan Nasional (PN). Both candidates handed over their forms to the Election Management Officer, Khairulnizam Hashim.

The Secretary of Nibong Tebal PKR Branch, S.Galaimani and the seconder, Puteri UMNO Chief, Ameera Nadia Mohd Shafiee, both accompanied Dr. Joohari to hand over his form at 9.05am.

Meanwhile, Abidin handed over his form at 9.15am accompanied by the proposer, Treasurer of PN Election Machinery, Abdul Rahman Hashim and the seconder, Secretary of the PN Election Machinery, Amizan Ariffin.

The candidate nomination centre had been opened from 9am until 10am to enable candidates to hand over their forms.

On another development, the Pulau Pinang Police spokesman for Sungai Bakap by-election, Senior Assistant Commissioner W. Puspanathan said, 600 officers and police personnel were involved in the traffic control and safety throughout the candidate nomination process.

“The police have been satisfied with the cooperation from the political parties that will be competing,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

He said, the police have not received any report on offences relating to the by-election.

The Sungai Bakap by-election will be a one- to- one contest between PH candidate, Dr. Joohari Ariffin and PN candidate Abidin Ismail.

The by-election is held following the death of the incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff on 24 May 2024 due to stomach inflammation.
The Election Commission has fixed the voting for the by-election on 6 July 2024 while the early voting will take place on 2 July.
