Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has purchased a painting in which the artist depicts Malaysia’ s Members of Parliament (MPs) as monkeys and frogs in the Dewan Rakyat.
“A painting had attracted the attention of the Selangor ruler.
“As soon as he saw it, the sultan consented to buy it to be hung in his private study room,” a statement posted on the Selangor palace’s Instagram and Facebook accounts said today.
The painting, which looks a bit similar to a 2009 illustration by British street artist Banksy, has also attracted the attention of the netizens who posts many comments agreeing with the artist.
One social media user, in her comment, pleaded for the sultan to not auction the artwork.
“Instead, hand it over to the National Museum, Your Majesty, for the next generation to see,” she said.
The palace did not reveal more details about the painting, its cost or the name of the artist who drew it.
The similar painting portraying MPs as monkeys in Britain Parliament by Banksy was sold in 2019 for nearly £12 million.
