KUALA LUMPUR: Regardless of race and locality, all students who obtained 10As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams recently are guaranteed a place in any matriculation programme in the country.

Prime Minister, DatukSeri Anwar Ibrahim said, the details of the announcement will be released by the Minister of Education, Fadhlina Sidek tomorrow (Monday).

Anwar said, the Cabinet had made the decision last Friday on the issue of fairness in education among the people.

“This issue often becomes controversial when students pass the SPM but have to face with limited educational opportunities.

“To address this issue, the Cabinet convened to examine the proposals and consider solutions that do not overlook any group of students.

“The Unity Government decided that starting this year, all students obtaining good results especially 10As and above will be guaranteed a place in the matriculation programmes by the government,” he said in his speech at the closing of the National Training Week in Bukit Jalil, Sunday.

Established in 1998, the matriculation programme is a preparatory programme for Bumiputera students to qualify them for undergraduate studies in science, technology and professional arts at local and international institutions of higher learning.

However, in 2005, the selection process for the programme is implemented through race based quota system where 90 per cent are reserved for Bumiputera students and 10 per cent for non-Bumiputera students.

Anwar added, the existing Bumiputera quota system for the matriculation programme under the Ministry of Education will remain unchanged.

In another development the Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek said, the prime minister’s announcement was a guarantee that there will be ample educational opportunities and those with excellent SPM results will obtain a place to pursue their higher education.

“We express our gratitude to the prime minister for the significant and important announcement.

“This is an assurance that students with outstanding results in their SPM exams will further their studies to the tertiary level this year. The provision has been guaranteed by the prime minister,” she said to reporters when commenting on the matter. –Malaysia World News
