BINTULU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Russia recently had resulted in assurances of continued energy supplies to support both domestic demand and Malaysia’s long-term export commitments to countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
He said President Putin assured him during their meeting that arrangements and long-term agreements would be established to ensure a continuous energy supply to Malaysia.
Speaking at the ceremony marking the transfer of Bintulu Port from a federal port to a state port here on Sunday he said, this assurance is important because the country’s energy requirements are not only for the domestic market, but also to fulfil long-term commitments to several other countries.
Anwar said the outcomes of his visit to Russia were particularly significant as global energy markets continued to face uncertainty due to geopolitical conflicts and broader economic challenges.
Meanwhile, he also revealed that Malaysia had secured access to several strategic gas blocks in Turkmenistan through cooperation involving national oil and gas company Petronas.
According to Anwar the development would strengthen Malaysia’s position in the natural gas sector while creating new opportunities for the country’s energy industry on the international stage adding that the achievement highlighted growing international confidence in Malaysia as a strategic energy partner.
“The success reflects the country’s political stability, policy clarity and the confidence of the international community in Malaysia’s capability as a trusted strategic partner in the global energy industry,’’ he said.
