KUALA LUMPUR: Shariah high court has today sentenced Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah to seven days over her statement that “insulted” the Islamic judicial system.
According to FMT, on Sept 5, 2019, Maria issued a statement saying: “Muslim women are still being discriminated under Malaysia’s shariah legal system.”
She said the shariah court’ s decision to sentence SM Faisal SM Nasimuddin’s former wife, Emilia Hanafi, to seven days in prison for rescheduling her visitation dates for her children was a “grave injustice” and a “total disgrace to the judicial system”.
Maria’s lawyer, Rosli Dahlan, said she would be appealing the decision and urged the court to suspend the seven-day jail sentence.
If she is jailed, she might lose her career as MP, a source said.
