RIYADH: Finally women are permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia starting from June next year 2018.
Saudi King Salman issued a decree this week ordering that women be allowed to drive on the roads.
The implementation of the decree will take effect by June 2018, according to a state news agency.
Banning women driving was internationally regarded as a sign of oppression and discrimination against women in the Gulf kingdom.
US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May praised Saudi King Salman`s decision to end the ban.
Trump said, the decree is “a positive step toward promoting the rights and opportunities of women in Saudi Arabia”.
Theresa May saw it as an “important step towards gender equality”.
Saudi Arabia kingdom was the only country in the world to prohibit women from driving.
For many years, activists and human right watchdogs were defying the convention and calling for the ban to be lifted.
