KUALA LUMPUR 16 JUNE – A slander is actually a crime because it is an “invented story” from an incident that is not true and is aimed at damaging the reputation and credibility of a person, said Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

“As Malaysians, we should not be easily swayed by rumours and allegations but instead check the validity and the truth of the stories that are spreading around.

“In this context, I urge the public not to be taken in easily by slanderous stories or “fitnah” that has been spin by the social media,” said the President of the Welfare Association of Wives of the Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) in her speech at the “Presentation of  Hari Raya Aidilfitri Gifts and Contributions to the Malaysian Armed Forces” (MAF) at Wisma Pertahanan here today.

Also present were the Minister of Defence and Minister with Special Functions, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Chief of Defence Force Malaysian Armed Forces General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor and their spouses and contributors from the corporate and private sectors, organizations and individuals.

The function also witnessed 47 companies which have contributed RM1.4 million, apart from other 17 contributors who donated biscuits and food items, to MAF.

Meanwhile, the MAF Zakat Fund received RM1.2 million that came from Armed Forces Fund Board (RM350,000),  MAF Cooperative (RM350,000) and Affin Islamic Bank Bhd. (RM500,000).

Rosmah added as Malaysia is a fast developing country, we should prepare the people to be a “thinking society”.

According to the wife of the Prime Minister, some irresponsible people have been using the computer networks and Internet to spread “fitnah” and made-up stories to tarnish the credibility of a leader, organization or a country.

“To spread their dirty tricks, the social media has been used as the prime weapon to confuse and influence the minds and the thinking of the public,” she said.

Rosmah also said, it is inevitable that people living in countries with conflicts and divide are not only poor and lack in development aspects but their safety is also at stake. As such we should be away from activities such as the extremists’ movements that could create havocs and disturb the peacefulness of the country.

At the function, Rosmah presented 20,000 packages consisting of briyani rice, chicken, vegetable dalca, fruit acar, and fried onions as Hari Raya Gifts to The Malaysian Armed Forces.
