RM1 million allocated to Tabung Kasih@HAWANA 2025 to help working, retired journalists facing health problems – PM

KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced the additional allocation of RM1 million to Tabung Kasih@HAWANA for 2025.

He said he wanted to continue the provision because last year he announced RM1 million for Tabung Kasih@HAWANA so he will continue with the same amount for the coming year.

The Prime Minister announced the good news in his speech when he officiated the Journalists’ National Celebration 2024 (HAWANA) here 28th May. He also highlighted that the same amount was announced when he officiated the HAWANA 2023 in Ipoh, Perak.

Earlier Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil in his welcoming speech said, up to date 102 ex-staff and media practitioners who need help had been assisted since the initiative was introduced last year.

According to the Minister, the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA 2023 was set up to help working and retired journalists and media practitioners who have health problems and need aids.

“The Communications Ministry’s Initiative is implemented via the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) to help journalists and media practitioners who are still working or retired,” he said.

In the same event, Fahmi announced that 538 part time media practitioners are eligible to receive a social security organization (SOCSO) contribution for one year starting July 1, 2024.

He said, the Ministry of Communication through Bernama will fully cover the contribution.

Fahmi then requested all registered media organisations to update their respective data to make it easier for the aid to be channelled by the Ministry.

“According to the Information Department’s data, 565 registered media practitioners are part-time or stringers and out of which 538 do not have Socso contribution,” Fahmi said.

Present at the celebration were Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, two Deputy Premiers of Sarawak namely Datuk Ammar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian.

The event was organised by the Communications Ministry in collaboration with the Sarawak government with Bernama acting as the implementing agency.

About 1,000 guests comprising of media practitioners from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Phillippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Cambodia, Timor Leste, China, South Korea, Qatar, France and Kuwait gathered in Kuching for three days celebration to partake in various programmes.

Meanwhile May 29 has been gazetted as the National Journalists’ Day in conjunction with the publication of the maiden edition of Utusan Melayu on May 29, 1939 and to celebrate the contribution of media practitioners. –Malaysia World News
