PM urges Mindef to change its defence systems to face global threats

Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathr  received by the Chief Secretary of Mindef, Datuk Halimi Abd. Manaf and Minister of Defence, Mohamad Sabu and his deputy Senator Liew Chin Tong at the Ministry of Defence, in Kuala Lumpur here today,  on his first official working visit to Mindef.

KUALA LUMPUR FEB. 21: The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) have to change its defence systems to suit today’s threats that come in various forms from the enemies with different ideologies and principles.

Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir said, globalisation that has been related to economy all the while is now associated with terrorisms and wars.

“The current situation warrants the Minister of Defence to shoulder heavy responsibilities to face more complex threats. In this globalisation era, threats happen every time as information spreads very fast and across borders.

“Any changes happening in any part of the world will have a direct, indirect impact and influence to the stability and prosperity of a country,” he said in his speech addressing 600 military personnel and staff of Mindef at the ministry’s auditorium.

The Prime Minister was on his first official working visit to the Ministry of Defence at Jalan Padang Tembak, here today 

Dr. Mahathir added, the ministry should study the impact and the recent global development to help the government to take necessary and suitable diplomatic decisions and at the same time evaluate the relevant equipments needed by the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).

The Prime Minster said: “In the effort to have diplomacy and good relationship with other countries, most importantly the sovereignty of Malaysia should not be threatened or being pawned.”

Tun Mahathir added, Pakatan Harapan (PH) government is consistently giving attention to the weaponry equipment needs of MAF. The government will try its best to realize the MAF Development Plan to strengthen its “alertness” and this includes the ARMY For Next Generation Plan, Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Plan 15 to 5 and Capability 2055 Plan or #CAP55 for Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

The seventh Prime Minister also mentioned about the good governance and integrity factors that have been raised by the NationalAudit to government departments and agencies.

“The comments and remarks raised by the audit include programme management, activities, building, income, system or information technology and communication, maintenance and income management. The Ministry of Defence is not exempted in the auditor’s remarks,” Dr. Mahathir reiterated.

In relation to that, Dr. Mahathir advised Mindef  to increase and strengthens its domestic financial control so that issues that have been raised by the auditor will not be repeated and the non-compliance risks could be reduced.

He also urged the Ministry to equip the staff responsible in the financial management with consistent training, proper skill and knowledge. This is in line with the government’s commitment to make Malaysia well known for its good governance, efficient and high integrity culture. –Malaysia World News
