Tokyo, Japan: Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad today urged Malaysian people to adopt and emulate the Japanese work ethics and sense of shame in order for Malaysia to develop in a short period of time.

Unlike the Japanese, Malaysian people do not feel ashamed when producing low-quality products, Dr. Mahathir said in his speech today at a dinner with Malaysians staying in Japan.

Dr.Mahathir is attending the 24th International Conference on the Future of Asia or Nikkei Conference for two days beginning today until Jun 12. He is accompanied by his wife Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Ali and Foreign Ministry officials.

“Look at the way how the Japanese produce their product, all done perfectly and exactly as they wanted it.

“When I came to Japan in 1961, the country was still in shambles because of the war. The country was destroyed. But the Japanese people worked very hard in order to rebuild the country. And true enough, Japan quickly became the second biggest economy in the world. From a defeated, destroyed country, Japan was able to rebuild itself fast and effectively,” he said.

Tun asked himself: “Why the Japanese can do this when others cannot do?” Others who never suffered from the war were still unable to grow their country and prosper their people.

“The reason why the Japanese succeeded in rebuilding their country lies in their work ethics.”

The work ethic is very important. If you have the wrong way of working, if you are late back, if you are not hard working, you are not diligent, you will fail, he added.

He said, the Japanese as you know, has a very strong sense of shame. In the old days, if they do something that is bad, they feel ashamed to the extent of killing themselves.

“They may kill themselves because they feel ashamed of their failures,” Dr. Mahathir added.

That sense of shame is still here today (in Japan). If their product is of poor quality they will feel ashamed, Dr. Mahathir told the crowd during his speech at the dinner with Malaysians staying in Japan.

“Unfortunately, feeling ashamed that you are not delivering good things is not in Malaysian value.

“We have to learn from the Japanese and adopt their idea that it is shameful to produce poor quality products or fail to deliver. Then you are bound to succeed because your product will be of the highest quality possible.

“It is not only about investment from Japan, it is not just about coming to study in Japan, but it is about acquiring the Japanese work ethics,” Dr. Mahathir added. – Malaysia World News
