KUALA LUMPUR: In conjunction with Teacher’s Day today, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin urges teachers to adapt and make online teaching as an important alternative towards innovative approach in the education system.
Home-based learning or online teaching from home will be the new norm in the teaching profession, he said, adding as such teachers are required to be well trained and possess good skills in online teaching and e-learning from home, during the Movement Control Order (MCO) that is enforced to curb the spread of coronavirus.
He also emphasised that during this period of MCO, teaching and learning could not be conducted face-to-face.
“Many teachers are using online applications like Google Classroom, cikgooTUBE, Zoom for home-based learning, besides WhatsApp and Telegram applications.
“I was informed there are also teachers providing sports training online,” he said in a message on Teachers’ Day today.
On the question that many poor students do not have even a suitable device or access to the Internet service, he said , ” teachers must use many other methods, such as ” printing homework questions for their students and sending the questions to their homes.”
The schools have been closed in Malaysia for about two months, since March 14, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and MCO.
Muhyiddin said, the reopening of schools will be announced when the Ministry of Health advised to do so, but most likely it will reopen in sections.
“Schools will be reopened first for the students sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) examinations.
