LANGKAWI:  Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said that the ringgit may depreciate more due to the trade war between the United States and China.

However, he said, the situation could be avoided if Malaysia does not rely heavily on imports from foreign countries.

“If we can (our own) produce vegetables, fruits, fish, livestock and so on, we will not depend on the supply from other countries, so God willing, (then) we will be able to strengthen and improve our economy, and when the economy is healthy, the ringgit will strengthen,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also suggests the government should attract more foreign investments to boost Malaysia  economy and further strengthen the ringgit.

“In the short term, we are trying to attract investment from abroad.

“But unfortunately we cannot get employees from our own country. We have to rely on foreign workers,” he was quoted saying by Bernama at a press conference after handing over the Langkawi Level Kihih Ibu Darul Aman (KIDA) card to 48 recipients at the Langkawi District Public Defensive Complex (APM) here today.

Dr Mahathir also urges the government to offer training to the local people to make them more efficient.

The government should also encourage local young people to learn ” English as investors speak in that language,” he said.
