HANGZHOU: The Mandarin translation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s book, “Rethinking Ourselves: Justice, Reform and Ignorance in Postnormal Times,” would help broaden readers’ understanding of shared values between Islam, Chinese culture and other civilisations.

Anwar said the Mandarin edition would also provide an opportunity for people in China and Mandarin speakers to better understand the ideas, experiences and thoughts presented in the book.

Anwar added, the book was not an autobiography but a compilation of his reflections and views on global developments, including conflicts stemming from colonialism and imperialism, as well as the rise of newly independent nations.

He said it explored questions about how these countries should determine their future, defend their identity and sovereignty, and whether they should focus solely on their own interests or share prosperity for mutual benefit.

According to Anwar he was particularly touched when Chinese Premier Li Qiang informed him about efforts to translate the book into Mandarin.

“I was deeply touched when he expressed his support for this effort. He said the translation of the book was being carried out using the best approach,” he said when launching the book here Tuesday night as reported by NST.

Anwar is in China for a three-day working visit at the invitation of the Chinese government.

He arrived in Shanghai on Monday and attended the opening ceremony of the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 Conference officiated by Li. Anwar also delivered the keynote address at the conference’s plenary session.

On Thursday, Anwar will deliver a keynote address at the Global Digital Trade Expo (GDTE). The event is to be officiated by Li at the Hangzhou International Expo Centre. Anwar would also launch the Malaysia Pavilion.

Earlier, Anwar held meetings with senior management of five Chinese industrial giants — AgiBot Innovation, ZTE Corporation, Alibaba Group, Geely Automobile Holdings and Huawei Technologies.

He said discussions focused on exploring new investment opportunities and strategic cooperation in high-impact sectors, including humanoid robotics, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicle (EV) technology and e-commerce.

“AgiBot expressed its commitment to potential investments worth RM1 billion by 2035, with the creation of 5,000 job opportunities.

“ZTE, meanwhile, outlined initiatives and investments worth RM170 million to drive Malaysia’s digital transformation, while creating more quality career opportunities for Malaysians,” he said.

Anwar said discussions with Alibaba Group focused on efforts to expand market access for Malaysian products, particularly those from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and the country’s halal industry, to the Chinese and global markets through Alibaba’s digital ecosystem.
