PUTRAJAYA MAR.1: The opening of the national borders will be announced by the Prime Minister on the date that has been fixed following the Cabinet’s decision on its implementation.

Chairman of the COVID-19 Quartet Minister’s Meeting and Senior Minister of Defence, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said, besides that there is another way where Malaysians could travel overseas that is via the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) as this scheme allows the movements of entering and exiting Malaysia and other countries that have not opened their borders.

Hishammuddin said, currently VTL has been implemented between Malaysia-Singapore while the Prime Minister has also announced the VTL scheme between Malaysia-Thailand and Malaysia-Brunei that will be implemented soon.

“At the same time, the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are studying the potential countries that could be included in the VTL scheme from time to time,” Hishammuddin said in a statement here today.

The Senior Minister said, the opening of the national borders will be based on three basic factors namely providing travellers with easiness and not making their journey difficult and secondly based on science and current facts related to COVID-19 and thirdly comparing the need to open the borders with other countries.

Hishammuddin added, considering the decisions made, the Ministry and related agencies are now detailing the protocols including pre-departure and arrival to the country.

“Once the protocols have been finalised and permission has been granted the Malaysians could travel to the country that has opened its borders,” Hishammuddin said.

The Minister added the Quartet has agreed that the country needs one exit strategy that is “Shifting to Endemic” Phase. This is a transitional phase or shift as a preparation before entering the full endemic phase. The complete endemic phase depends on the announcement that will be made by the World Health Organization (WHO).

There are seven principles to be fulfilled in the “Shifting to Endemic” Phase said Hishammuddin because once the government announced the endemic phase the efforts to protect oneself from the virus depends on self-discipline. Among it is taking the tracing test against COVID-19 if symptoms prevail and this is under the third principle that is National Testing Strategy.

“Make the COVID-19 tracing test as a routine and report every result in MySejahtera and this is the fourth principle that is TRISS,” Hishammuddin said.- Malaysia World News
