Nazri: Taxis’ reputation for cheating tourists was hurting tourism

KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism and culture minister Nazri Aziz said that the taxis’ reputation for cheating tourists was hurting tourism.

This is the reason why the Cabinet has allowed Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) to regularise Uber and GrabCar .

With Uber and GrabCar, taxi drivers no longer can cheat tourists, Nazri said at a press conference at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Tsun Jin here yesterday.

“Tourists can use their phones and straight away order a cab from Uber or GrabCar.

Taxi industries had to understand that as a country Malaysia had to move forward.  “It’s not our fault if local taxis are left behind. Everyone has to move forward and taxi industries are no exception,”he added.

Uber and GrabCar, he said, are “popular all over the world but when it comes to Malaysia we stop it. We can’t do that and if local taxis are not happy about it then that’s just too bad.”

He also advised the local taxi drivers to learn to improve themselves if they wanted to survive, instead of just playing the victim and blaming the government.
