KUALA LUMPUR: The partnership and collaboration between Umno and PAS will focus more on Islam and Malays, ending the multicultural spirit that Barisan was founded upon since 1969.
Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said the Umno-PAS union had ended the “multicultural spirit” of Barisan of 1969.
Nazri was referring to the formation of the Barisan coalition which comprised Umno, MCA and MIC after the 1969 general election and May 13 racial riots.
Meanwile, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng cautioned that the cooperation of Umno and PAS would put non-Malays in the political crosshairs.
In a statement, Lim said that the move signalled the end of the ‘1Malaysia’ concept propagated by the previous BN administration, as Umno doubled down on the rhetoric of race and religion in recent by-elections.
