Najib’s trial on corruption charges will start on Feb, 2019

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who pleaded not guilty on charges of corruption and criminal breach of trust (CBT) will go on trial for 19 days starting on February 2019 as fixed by the High Court here today.

The court fixed the trial dates as Feb. 18 to 28, March 4 to 8 and March 11 to 15, 2019.

Najib was charged for corruption and CBT in a case linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

The Pekan Member of Parliament was charged for misusing his position as a government official to receive RM42 million bribe as an inducement to provide a sovereign guarantee on behalf of the Malaysian Government for a loan of RM4 billion from a government pension fund to SRC International Sdn. Bhd.

Apart from that Najib was also charged with three counts of CBT in his capacity as Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Advisor Emeritus of SRC International in which he was entrusted with RM4 billion.

The court allows him on bail at RM1 million in cash and two sureties. Najib has to surrender both his normal and diplomatic passports to the court.  

Najib left the court complex here at 3.20 pm soon after his sureties paid RM500, 000 as part of the bail and the rest will have to be paid before 3 pm on Monday.

Earlier on, a press conference by Attorney-General Tommy Thomas at the Kuala Lumpur court lobby complex had to be canceled on security purposes when Najib supporters turned rowdy and shouted “Bahasa Malaysia”, “Melayu” and “Hidup Melayu”.
