Najib is still a member of parliament, despite Court of Appeal upholds his conviction

PUTRAJAYA: Even though the Court of Appeal upheld Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s conviction and sentence in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case, he is still Pekan MP, as he files an appeal to the Federal Court against the decision, a lawyer told The Star.

The news portal quoted Lawyer Lim Wei Jiet saying: “If the former prime minister files an appeal to the Federal Court, he will not lose his Pekan seat until a decision by the Federal Court is made.”

“This can be stretched further if there is a request for a pardon after the Federal Court’s decision and if the pardon is unsuccessful, he will lose his seat 14 days after that.

“However, until the conviction is set aside, he cannot contest in any election,” he told the Star.

This morning, the Court of Appeal upheld the Supreme Court’s decision against former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak who was sentenced to 12 years in prison and a fine of RM210 million for the offenses of smuggling RM42 million SRC International Sdn funds Bhd (SRC)

The Court of Appeal then allowed a stay of application by Najib on the execution of his jail time pending an appeal to the Federal Court.

prosecutor Datuk V. Sithambaram said it is unknown if the Federal Court would continue to uphold the verdict on all seven charges against the Pekan MP.
