PUTRAJAYA: In the effort to guarantee the national food security, the National Farmers Organization (NAFAS) is targeting to have 20 per cent of the market and production share amounting to 144 million chickens a year while Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (ANGKASA) will supply 30 million chickens within the same period.

Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, both NAFAS and ANGKASA will be involved significantly in the chicken breeding (poultry) industry and in line with the proposal of the Economic Action Council (EAC) that the public and the private cooperation should be strengthened to increase the agricultural production specially in the poultry industry.

“NAFAS and ANGKASA will be involved in the poultry industry ecosystem starting from the new born chicken, livestock food, vaccine, chicken coop, processing centre, cold frozen room, logistics, distribution and marketing centre until the supply reaches the customers,” Ismail said in a statement.

In another development Ismail said, NAFAS and ANGKASA will be more pro-active in the growing of corn grains to reduce the dependency on imported raw materials for chicken food.

Ismail added, to reach the objective, NAFAS had identified 12,140 hectors of land in Kelantan and Terengganu that were once tobacco growing areas and to be replaced by corn grains for the chicken food.

Meanwhile, ANGKASA had identified 4,000 hectors of land nationwide with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. Every hector is able to produce five tonnes of corn grains and accommodate 20 per cent of the imported corn grains in five years. -Malaysia World News
