KUALA LUMPUR 25 April – “No country can be in isolation but to cooperate with other nations to address new threats and challenges in the world today,” said Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
Cooperation on common issues in the defence and security aspects between Malaysia and Canada is very pertinent, he added.
Hishammuddin said this after Minister of National Defence of Canada, His Excellency, Harjit Singh Sajjan paid a courtesy call on him at Wisma Pertahanan, here today.
The King Salman Centre for International Peace (KSCIP) which was initiated by Malaysia and Saudi Arabia that focused on DAESH and IS had a positive response from Harjit Singh.
The discussion also dealt with how Canada had contributed and worked together to counter the evil ideologies of DAESH and IS, Hishammuddin said in a press conference with the presence of Harjit Singh.
“We reaffirmed our commitment as allies in the fight against terrorism and extremism. We discussed a range of counter-measures against the threat of the Islamic State (DAESH) and agreed that returning fighters from territories lost in Iraq and Syria pose a serious threat to Muslim countries that uphold democracy around the world,” he added.
On military-to-military relations, Malaysia highly appreciates the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) continued commitment to Exercise MANTIS, the only training on Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear Warfare (CBRN) within the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). This serves as an opportunity for both the MAF and CAF to enhance skills and training in this unique area, Hishammuddin said.
“Harjit Singh and I also discussed on a potential collaboration between the defence industries of both our nations, specifically with regards to the tropical testing of defence equipment and assets and acclimatizing them to our region’s unique climate.
“We agreed to elevate our existing defence relations to a more focused and structured level, to further strengthen and coordinate our defence industries, military-to- military cooperation, and strategic matters of interest to Malaysia and Canada,” he added.
Hajjit Singh was on his three-day visit to Malaysia and that was the first official visit undertaken by a Minister of National Defence of Canada since the establishment of bilateral ties between Malaysia and Canada in 1957.
Meanwhile, Harjit Singh mentioned that it is the world’s responsibility to address new challenges faced by the region and as such both countries are working towards a good collaborating relationship.
“We have many common issues as Canada is a diverse country. We will have a peaceful operation after having dialogue sessions together,” Harjit Singh reiterated.
