KUALA LUMPUR 9 Jan.- Mohd. Faiz Subri, 29, created a new history in Malaysian football when he emerged as the first local player to win the 2016 FIFA Puskas Award in Zurich, Switzerland yesterday morning.
The Ayer Hitam, Kedah-born footballer also made the Malaysians proud when he became the first Asian player to receive the prestigious award.
The striker of Penang football team, Mohd. Faiz garnered nearly 60 percent of the votes to enable him to receive the award. He managed to put aside two other shortlisted goals of 24-year-old Corinthians midfielder Marlone of Brazil and 17-year-old Venezuela national woman’s player Daniuska Rodriguez.
Puskas Award was established in 2009 and among the recipients were Christiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimonic and Neymar.
Mohd. Faiz’s “fierce swerve” in a free kick of 4-1 win against Pahang in a Super League match on 16 February 2016 startled goalkeeper Mohd. Nasril Nourdin and thus failed to catch the ball from entering the net. –malaysiaworldnews.com
