“Of course I feel nervous because all the while I live with the ordinary people but now I have to follow the rules and protocols besides adopting a new lifestyle,” he said when asked his feelings when he first stepped into the premises of the Ministry of Defence at 9.30am Tuesday.
Mohamad Sabu was received by the Chief Secretary of Defence Ministry, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi and Chief of Armed Forces, Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor.
The Defence Minister was then taken to inspect a military parade before he was introduced to senior army officials and then clocked in at his office about 9.45a.m.
In his first press conference as the Defence Minister today, Mohamad Sabu said even though he has to follow the protocols, he will still have his “Mat Sabu style.”
Member Of Parliament for Kota Raja, Mohamad Sabu sworn in as Minister of Defence before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhamad V at Istana Negara on Monday with 12 other ministers of Pakatan Harapan Government.
Mohamad Sabu also stressed that before any action is taken on a person, an internal investigation has to be conducted with the assistance of internal auditor and if it fails then the case has to go to the cabinet ministers.
“We do not act on hearsay basis but on investigation. As far as possible we do not want to damage the image of the person and the department involved,” he said when asked whether he will investigate several allegations that were made against the ministry before he became the minister.
He added, in the first week he will have a series of briefings with the heads of departments and military chiefs and will give feedbacks when necessary.
“The good services will continue and for any weaknesses found certain improvement will be made,” he added.
Regarding the “King Salman Centre for International Peace” which was established during Barisan Nasional’s Government, Mohamad Sabu said, he will have to discuss with Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on that matter.
