Malaysian high ranking government officials must sit for English proficiency test, new PM of Malaysia says

PUTRAJAYA: Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim has submitted his resignation without stating any reason, says Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

Prime Minister,  Dr. Mahathir said, Muhammad had expressed his desire to resign and the Cabinet had accepted it, said Dr. Mahathir in a media conference after chairing the Cabinet Meeting here today.

“He did not say any reason for resigning,” he said, when asked whether it was linked to the RM2bil land deal. 

Dr. Mahathir added, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s approval is needed to announce a new governor.

Meanwhile, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government announced the appointment of former Chief Auditor General, Tan Sri Ambrin Buang as Chairman of the Special Committee of Governance and Acquisition.

He added, the Ministry of Defence will be the first to be investigated and probed into by the special committee.  

On the English proficiency and competency of high ranking government officials, Dr. Mahathir said they are expected to master the language as they are required to have meetings and negotiations with the Malaysian foreign counterparts.

“The officers concerned will have to sit for competency and English proficiency tests as to enable them to be at the forefront.

“Government officials in the Jusa A category will have their entertainment allowance cut by 10 percent to save the government financial expenses,” he said.

 Meanwhile Dr. Mahathir also announced the release of RM50 million for Aidilfitri Incentive to Felda settlers while RM44 million will be for Felcra settlers.

Dr. Mahathir said, the incentive of RM450 each for Felda settlers is given out from the government’s provision while the Felcra incentive is taken from the profit made.

On the Cost of Living Aid (Bantuan Sara Hidup) Dr. Mahathir said, it will be given out accordingly but for 2019 the scheme will have to be reviewed as some recipients are found not qualified to have it. 

Dr. Mahathir also mentioned that his government has found that “extremist bodies” existed in the Ministry of Health.

Adding to that, he said there is overlapping of powers among ministries and this problem will be solved after a comparison study has been made. – Malaysia World News
