KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Youth and Sports has confirmed that Malaysia will not host the 2026 Commonwealth Games following the decision made by the cabinet meeting, Friday.

The Ministry said, the decision was made after taking into consideration all aspects and implications of hosting a major sports event such as the Commonwealth Games.

According to the ministry, the cabinet’s decision to turn down the offer from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) was due to the grant amounting RM603 million which was not sufficient to host the large scale event.

“The economic impact from hosting the event cannot be realised in the nearest time,” the ministry said.

Referring to the offer, the ministry highlighted that CGF had met the Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh and Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan on 5th Feb.2024 to explain about hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

However, the ministry said, the Madani government has extended their appreciation to CGF for the offer made to Malaysia to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026.

The ministry reiterated that currently the government wants to focus on sports development besides looking after the welfare and livelihood of the people.

Earlier the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) in a statement said, discussions with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia had started following the formal invitation from CGF to the OCM as the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) of Malaysia last month.

The offer on the possibility of Malaysia staging the 2026 Commonwealth Games was due to the withdrawal of winning bidder Victoria last year. -Malaysia World News
