PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will be doomed to poverty and misery if education system not refined or reformed, warns Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah.

The Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group said Malaysia’s education system needs a massive overhaul.

“We will doom our children and our country to a future of poverty and misery,” if this challenge is not addressed urgently, he said in an open letter in conjunction with the 65th National Day.

“In a globalised world, the competition our children face will come not just from the student at the next desk, but from far beyond our borders,” said Jeffrey Cheah.

The decline in the command of English among Malaysians, when English is the language of trade and commerce and Malaysia is a trading nation, is something we have to worry about , he said.

He added, lack of fluency in English may hinder Malaysians getting more opportunities in today’ s globalized world.

He also expressed alarm about corruption, which has reached an endemic level in the country and “unless we seriously root out corruption, we are in trouble”.

Last year, Dr. Jeffrey Cheah  was listed in Asia’s Philanthropic Heroes by Forbes Asia for the fourth time. The list honors individuals who have proven to have demonstrated personal commitment in championing various social causes.
