PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian contingent has targeted to grab 40 gold medals, 37 silver, and 64 bronze at the 32nd SEA Games hosted by Cambodia scheduled to start on 5th May 2023.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh said, the medals’ target has also taken into consideration that the host country did not include 57 sports events from what Vietnam had listed last year and this will witness the contingent to lose 18 gold medals, 16 silver, and 30 bronze.
She said the sports events not listed in Cambodia include three boxing; 2 highway cycling, 1 sport dance; 1 female futsal; 3 gymnastic artistic; 1 kick-boxing; 3 sepaktakraw; 7 archeries; 4 shooting; 2 gymrama; 3 tenpin bowling; 2 muay thai and 8 bodybuilding.

“This would mean that the Malaysian contingent will not compete to grab 242 gold, silver, and bronze medals in the events,” she said in her speech at the handing over of the national flag to the Malaysian contingent here Sunday.
Hannah added the Malaysian contingent consists of 928 members and out of which 677 are athletes and 251 officials. Of 677 athletes, 402 are males, and 275 are females.
However, she said, 440 of 677 athletes, or 65 percent will make their first appearance in the SEA Games in Cambodia. Of the total of athletes, 387 or 56.33 percent are below aged 23 while the field/track events will witness the most participation with 65 athletes and 21 officials.
