PUTRAJAYA JAN.23: Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob reaffirms Malaysia’s position pertaining to the need for the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar to be granted access to all parties concerned towards finding a peaceful solution in the interests of the people of Myanmar.
The Prime Minister said, in this relation, Malaysia supports the appointment of Prak Sokhonn as the new Special Envoy and remained committed to supporting ASEAN’s efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar.
Ismail stressed the urgent need for de-escalation of the situation in Myanmar and cessation of violence against civilians.
“There should be an inclusive political dialogue involving all parties concerned in the interests of the people of Myanmar and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi and U Win Myint.
“Humanitarian assistance through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) should be continued with the support of ASEAN Member States and ASEAN’s external partners,” Ismail said in a video conference held with Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen today.
During the video conference, Prime Minister Ismail congratulated Cambodia for assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship 2022 and thanked Hun Sen for the latest update on Myanmar.
Concerning ASEAN’s decision to invite a non-political representative from Myanmar to high-level ASEAN meetings, the Prime Minister underscored that Malaysia’s position on the matter remained unchanged, unless there was real progress and full implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.
The Ministry in its statement added, Prime Minister Ismial opined that proposed measures to address the situation in Myanmar should be deliberated at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Senior Officials’ levels.
“Malaysia agreed with the proposal by the ASEAN Chair for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat to be convened as soon as possible. Malaysia support for Cambodia’s Chairmanship and the initiatives towards furthering efforts to develop the ASEAN Community and ASEAN’s progress both at the regional and international fora. –Malaysia World News
