KUALA LUMPUR:  In fighting terrorism, Inspector-General of Police Mohamed Fuzi Harun (pic) said police arrested 389 people suspected of belonging to Islamic State (IS) over the last 5 years since 2013.

This includes six Malaysians arrested recently for allegedly planning attacks on non-Muslim places of worship and police stations.

“The Malaysian suspects were allegedly planning to launch attacks on non-Muslim houses of worship and abduct and kill policemen,” he said at the 211th Police Day parade here today.

Fuzi also said that the crime rate had dropped 11.7% in 2017 from the previous year.

Violent crimes dropped by 960 cases, while property crimes by 12,226 cases, thanks to Malaysian police strategic programmes.

The police would hold more community programmes, he said.

“The crime index shows a decrease of 9.7% from January to March 15 this year, while violent crimes dropped by 16.2% and property crimes by 7.9%,” he said.
