KUALA LUMPUR: Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres expressed his appreciation on Malaysia’s consistent and coherent foreign policy against the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Antonio said, the government of Malaysia does not practice double standard in voicing out their concerns on the rights of the Palestinians.

“The only thing that matter is what kind of force will be created and agreement made to implement further actions on the Israel-Palestinian issues.

“The UN is ready to play its role with the key actors in forming a comprehensive solution towards a permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” he said in a press conference after the 15th ASEAN-United Nations Summit in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here on Monday.

Regarding the general elections to be held in Myanmar, Antonio said he does not believe that the general elections will be free and following a fair system and in addition the elections will not solve the current problems facing the country.

He added, the United Nations Human Rights Council has just decided on the creation of the mechanism to assist the election process in Myanmar and this can be an important instrument to ascertain accountability.

On the free trade policy and how it can contribute to the lives of the people in the ASEAN bloc; Antonio explained that it involves what kind of agreement has been made. In principle it should improve the trading activities together with justice and equity existing in the developing nations.

“Financial reforms should be made by the global finance and other international institutions participating in the developing countries. This is to have more voices in the concessional funding without facing difficulties,” he said.

He added in the Asia Pacific, the free trade policy could benefit the people though effective multilateralism and effective multi-politics against super-power having dominant roles. This will guarantee the existence of more true multiplicity.

Meanwhile, on the issue of the United Nations Security Council’s veto power to be limited as proposed by United Kingdom and France, Antonio said, the Council is considering the proposal seriously. -Malaysia World News
