KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian deputy foreign minister, Datuk Marzuki Yahya, has been urged today to resign from his post for having allegedly lied about having a degree from Cambridge University, UK.

Over the week, he has come under very bad backlash on social media when doubts were raised over his school qualification.

At first he claimed he had a distance-learning degree in business administration from the British institution Cambridge University which is one of the top world universities in the world. But later on (today) after he was grilled by the media and netizens  he admitted that he had studied at  Cambridge International University in the United States, not in the British Institution Cambridge as he previously listed on his Wikipedia profile.

The opposition party UMNO has indeed called him to quit, accusing him of ‘deceiving the people’.

“How do you (Marzuki) deceive the people with a fake degree and then claim you are fighting against corruption and propagating good governance and ethics?” the head of Umno’s youth division Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki sarcastically told local media.

The claim sparked more mockery in Malaysia when the local media exposed that Cambridge International University  is not an accredited institution with US education authorities.

However, the member of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Marzuki blames the opposition party and critics for misunderstanding his credentials.

“I think they misunderstood. I (studied) at the Cambridge International University in the US.

“I was doing logistics (before joining politics). So I just took that certificate for my knowledge to expand my business,” he said when asked a news portal.
