KUALA LUMPUR: The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) will make an appeal to the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the Registrar of Societies’ (RoS) decision to suspend the party today.

PPBM Chairman, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he hoped PPBM would be given 30 days to do this.

“If the Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi rejects it then the case will go to the court of law so that decisions are made according to the law and not by the whims and fancies of the minister,” Mahathir said in a press conference on Thursday evening.

PPBM was suspended today by RoS which issued the provisional suspension under Section 14 (5) of the Societies Act 1966 and ordered PPBM to submit the minutes of meetings at its branch, division and national levels within the next 30 days.

Failing to do so, the Opposition party will be permanently deregistered.

However, he said, PPBM will not follow the directives of RoS even though they were asked to be suspended.

Mahathir claims that the notice sent by RoS is difficult to understand as it uses the word suspended or deregistered and as such we are assuming we can still function as usual until RoS deregistered the party officially.

“RoS did not abide by the Societies Act 1966 so the directive for suspension is not valid until the notice reaches us in a complete form,” he added.

Mahathir also claims that RoS sent the notice to the old head office at Damansara and not to the officer in charge.

“Whatever they do to us, we are going to contest even if we have to contest individually… we still contest.

“No way can they stop us from contesting. They declare our party illegal or whatever but they cannot declare we are illegals. We are legal citizens of this country and have all the rights particularly with regards to contesting in the election,” Tun Mahathir said.

Tun Mahathir said PPBM can write a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs and inform the minister that RoS has done a tyranny and acted outside the law.

Tun Mahathir also alleged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is “cheating” in order to win the election by paralysing his opponent.
