KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) is ready and well prepared to assist the plight of Rohingyas in Rakhine who are seeking refuge in the face of Myanmar’s military crackdown.

MAF Chief, General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor said, MAF has the capabilities to move and give humanitarian aids as they have been well tested in Afghanistan, Acheh and Philippines.

“We have the military police, engineers, hospitals with surgical and medical teams and facilities for such mission,” he said in a press conference in conjunction with MAF 84th Anniversary on the 16th September.

He added, the MAF has the capabilities of setting “a hospital” if the Rohingyas are in need of medicine.

According to him, Malaysia’s participation in several peacekeeping missions under the United Nations (UN) has been recognised by the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

Regarding the first group of MALBATT 850-5 contingent for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that left yesterday, Raja Mohamed Affandi  said, the Malaysian Armed Forces has been in Lebanon for 10 years.

“The mission is considered as an extension of military forces and is more of goodwill and we want to be part of the good international citizens.

“If the situation is good in Lebanon then we will redeploy our armed forces. Before UNIFIL, MAF has also sent its troops to Somalia, Namibia, Congo and Cambodia,” he added.

Asked about the good part of such mission to MAF, Raja Mohamed Affandi said, the international citizens gave us high respect for such contribution and that is part and parcel when we want peace in the world. – Malaysia World News
