LANGKAWI – The significant advancement of Malaysia’s aerospace industry sets a new ambition for Malaysia to become a leading aerospace nation in South East Asia and to be an integral part of the global market by 2030, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today at the opening ceremony of the 14th Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, LIMA`17.
Present at this fantastic opening ceremony held at Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) in the beautiful island, Langkawi, were Deputy Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi; Menteri Besar of Kedah, Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah; Minister of Defence, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, and Minister of International Trade and Industry Malaysia, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed; besides dozens of Defence Ministers and hundreds of delegates and exhibitors from all over the world.
The Prime Minister said that the aerospace industry is targeted “to generate an annual revenue of RM55.2 billion and create more than 32,000 high income jobs.”
“Today, Malaysia is one of the critical suppliers to Airbus and Boeing, with Malaysia producing more than 55 percent of composite wing parts for the A320 and B737,” Najib added.
Last year, the total trade for aerospace product stood at RM17.47 billion.
“Exports of Malaysia’s aerospace products, primarily parts and components, recorded a significant increase of 32.6 percent from the previous year, amounting to RM5.53 billion,” he said.
The Prime Minister said in term of revenue, the aerospace industry earned RM12.7 billion in 2016 and employed more than 21,000 highly skilled workers.
“Growth in this sector is expected to continue as nine additional nine aerospace projects with investments of RM1.6 billion, were approved in 2016- of which 57 percent were from foreign investors,” said Najib.
In the meantime, Najib also announced that in 2017 budget, the government allocates RM1.8 billion for defence maintenance activity, including asset maintenance for the Malaysian Navy, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and Marine Police.
During the opening ceremony, there was a gambit flypast show starting with two SU-30 MKM Sukhoi, three F/A-18D Hornet, five Hawk 108/208, three Airbus A400M, seven Pilatus PC 7 MKII, and three helicopter EC725 from the Royal Malaysian Air Force.
The Royal Malaysian Air Force performed a wonderful flypast over more than 4,000 crowd attended the opening ceremony this morning at MIEC, Langkawi.
