LIMA’17: Current emerging issues to be discussed in forums


Kuala Lumpur – The “Maritime SAR and Regional Challenges” forum led by Admiral Maritime, Dato’ Sri Ahmad Fuzi Ab. Kahar will be one of the highlights at LIMA ’17 events as it deals with the current challenges of risks and threats emerging in the Malaysian Maritime Search and Rescue region as well as the ASEAN region.

The Director General of the Malaysian Maritime and Enforcement Agency (MMEA) will focus on the requirements to continually improve a coordinated ASEAN SAR capability to counter the risks and threats emerging in the region. The region’s coastguards and enforcement agencies play a vital role in the region and during LIMA’17.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency will host the forum on 23rd March, at Balloom1, Resorts World.

LIMA’17 will also witness Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin hosting his first Royal Malaysia Navy Chief of Navy’s Roundtable Talks and be joined by his international counterparts, to discuss naval topics of importance across the region. This year’s theme is “Naval Capability Based Acquisition Reform”. (22nd March, Ballroom1, Resorts World).

Meanwhile, the presence of defence and transport ministers along with other high-ranking officials from 60 countries at the LIMA’17, scheduled in a week’s time will inevitably mark the importance of the event in the Asia Pacific region and globally.

About 290 guests are invited to attend the five-day event starting from 21st until 25th March. Amongst the guests are 59 ministers of defence, nine ministers of transport, 35 secretary general from various ministry of defence, 33 chief of defence forces, 13 chief of army, 50 chief of navy, 45 chief of air force, 10 inspector general of police, 9 director general of customs, 16 director general of coast and 11 director general of civil aviation.

The nine ministers of transport scheduled to be at LIMA’17 are from neighbouring countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The ministers and high-ranking officials among others will participate in seminars and conferences held at different venues and time.

Among the conferences held is the Air Chiefs Conference with the topic “Air Force Capability-Based Acquisition and the Reform” (22nd March, Pre-Function Room, Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre-MIEC). 

The ASEAN Aviation Summit 2017 will be focusing on Global Sustainable Green Aviation. The important event will also address the topic for member states in the region who had volunteered in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).  As of 12 October 2016, 66 member states of ICAO have voluntarily participated in the pilot phase of the CORSIA representing more than 86.5% of international aviation activity. The event will be hosted by the Ministry of Transport.(22nd March at MIEC).

The forum on the Aerospace Industry-Strengthening the Malaysian Aerospace Ecosystem will overview the current aerospace industry development in Malaysia. Aerospace industry players, related government agencies, academia and research institutions will be the participants of this forum. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry and Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) will be hosting the event.(22nd March, MITI Pavilion, MIEC).

MIGHT Open Forum: Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) is a biennial event of MIGHT introduced in conjunction with LIMA.

The forum will bring together key stakeholders such as policy-makers, industry players and academicians to share ideas, expanding the network and find opportunities to do business. For Lima’17, MIGHT together with panels from government agencies and industry players will present topics which will be focusing on SBSR industry development and initiatives. This event is supported by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.(22nd MITI Pavilion, MIEC).

The Czech Defence Technology Presentation, which will be hosted by the Embassy of the Czech Republic, showcases state-of-the-art solutions in the field of radiolocation, multilateration, freefall training, inflatable decoy technology, field connectivity infrastructure, fighter training, and aircraft propulsion (including UAVs).(22nd March, Product Demonstration Area, MIEC).

The talk on “Overview and Current Issues On Strategic Trade Act (STA) will give a brief introduction of the Act to assist and facilitate exporter to trade in a safe and secure environment, especially relating to strategic items. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry and Technology Depository Agency will host this session. (23rd March, MITI Pavilion MIEC).

The Talk on Research and Technology: Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre will be from industry led research & technology initiative in the aerospace industry.
