Khat will be taught in Srawak and Sabah schools too, no exceptions, says Education Minister Dr Maszlee

KUCHING: Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik has confirmed today that Sarawak and Sabah will also implement khat or Jawi calligraphy for Year 4 pupils in vernacular schools next year- there is no exception.

“Sabah and Sarawak are still in Malaysia. According to the Constitution, education is a federal matter and so is its implementation in the SJKC and SJKT,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, according to a report in Malay Mail.

Malaysia government has decided that khat will be included in the Bahasa Malaysia syllabus by next year. Students would not be tested on their calligraphy skills. However, it is not yet clear whether the khat lessons would be optional.
