KUALA LUMPUR 13 April – Chief of The Naval Staff Indian Navy Admiral Sunil Lanba paid a courtesy call on Malaysian Minister of Defence, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein at Wisma Pertahanan, here today.
Hishammuddin was accompanied by Chief of Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin and senior officers. They spent about an hour in a closed-door meeting with Sunil Lanba.
Admiral Sunil Lanba and his delegation are on a five-day visit from 11th till 15th April. They arrived at the RMN Headquarters at about 10.30am and the visit began with the salute from the Guide of Honor, Royal Malay Regiment Army (1 RAMD) at Dataran Wisma Pertahanan.
Before meeting Hishammuddin, Sunil had a courtesy call on Ahmad Kamarulzaman at his office.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Kamarulzaman said, Sunil’s visit to Malaysia was timely, just after the Prime Minister; Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak visited India recently.
“This visit gives us wider opportunity to explore new forms of co-operation apart from raising the level of bilateral relationship between both countries which have long historical ties. The long friendship has strengthened the trust and confidence between us and as such, enable us to discuss several issues more openly,” he told reporters at his office today.
Ahmad Kamarulzaman also said the initiative to co-operate should benefit both countries. RMN has sent officers to undergo several series of training in India as its level of knowledge in navy is very broad.
He added, in a visit to the Lumut RMN Base, Sunil was very impressed with the facilities and maintenance level even though it has been built 35 years ago.
“RMN and Indian Navy are also looking at opportunities where we could co-operate to reduce operational costs and this will only be achieved through trust and high confidence level.
“We are setting new benchmarks for higher targets and expectations. Apart from protecting the rich marine resources that Malaysia has, we have to ensure that the sea routes are safe to be used by all nations.
“There should be freedom of navigation and sea lines of communication. These aspects should be consistently protected and utilized together. This is particularly focused on the area where Straits of Malacca is feeding into the Indian Ocean,” he reiterated. – Malaysia World News
