KUALA LUMPUR: The Minister of Defence, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein is very concerned about fake news as it can be manipulated from outside the country.
He said fake news is written usually on the current political situations. Any allegation made in the current political scenario should be checked, verified and not add on to the emotion and sensitivities of the situation.
The Minister also stressed that the same phenomenon happens in the United Kingdom and the United States of America where fake news and allegations are verified thoroughly.
Hishammuddin was asked following the government’s plan to take up the issue on the fake news in the social media to be tabled in the Parliament soon.
Hishammuddin who is also the Minister with Special Functions also cited the cyber defence and said he cannot disclose any information to the public
“Military intelligence has worked very hard on this sector (cyber defence) and the services are not cheap. This segment is very sensitive to the safety and defence of the country and it should be safeguarded as some people have tried to hack on it,” he said after launching the new logo “Perkasa Perwira” at Wisma Perwira here on Thursday.
The word “Perkasa” reflects the effort made to strengthen and for the betterment of the army while the word “Perwira” reflects the warriors and fighters consisting of MAF families, MAF veterans and ministry’s staff. “Perkasa Perwira” means empowering the MAF and Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).
Meanwhile, Hishammuddin shot down the allegation that some veteran armies are denied from receiving good treatment and welfare services from the ministry and the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).
Hishammuddin said, the number of veteran armies is huge and as such, it is not impossible that some are not satisfied with the welfare services offered to them.
“We have offered our services in education to help the veteran army families and children have a better future. This includes providing special hospitals for veteran armies. Nevertheless, the dissatisfied numbers do not reflect the majority group.
“Three of us including me, Chief of Armed Forces, General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor and Secretary General of Defence Ministry, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi have cooperated and offered help continuously but with “limitation” to the veteran armies,” he said.
On an allegation that the National Service Training Programme 2.0 (PLKN) fails to instill patriotism spirit amongst the young generation, Hishammuddin said: “The complainant should come up with a suggestion and participate in the transformation programme to give feedback about PLKN.
“I question their motive on this issue. To point fingers at somebody is very easy but they have no idea or suggestion to make PLKN more effective,” he said.
