NARA: Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving leader, died on Friday after being shot while giving a speech at an election campaign here.
An official from his political party confirmed Abe dead, Reuters reported.
Abe, 67, was shot in the neck from behind when he was giving a speech at a drab traffic island in the western city of Nara, Japan.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned the shooting in the “strongest terms”.
“This attack is an act of brutality that happened during the elections – the very foundation of our democracy – and is absolutely unforgivable,” said Kishida.
