KUALA LUMPUR: A foreign “karen” woman slapped with RM3,000 fine in Malaysia for not wearing a face mask and failing to scan with MySejahtera app when entering a shop in KLCC.
Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Noor Dellhan Yahaya said they had issued the compound notices to the woman for breaching standard operating procedures (SOP).
“The first compound notice is for failing to scan with MySejahtera app before entering the premises, and the second is for failing to wear a face mask,” he said in a statement today.
The police took action against the caucasian woman after a viral video at a retail store in Kuala Lumpur showed the woman trying to enter a Bangsar shopping mall without wearing a mask and complaining to the shopping centre staff that the boutique worker had put his hands on her to prevent her from entering the store.
Malaysian netizens labelled her as ” karen” as she seemed to use her white privileges to demand her rights.
Commenting on the video, health minister Khairy Jamaluddin said his ministry was seeking more information from the mall.
“‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’. When in Malaysia, please mask up. Regardless of the rules elsewhere,” he said.
