Kuala Lumpur: A powerful earthquake in Morocco killed 296 people and injured 153 others last night (Friday, Sept 8), according to a preliminary government count.

The earthquake struck in the provinces and municipalities of Al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant, state TV reported.

Residents reported “unbearable” screams following the 6.8-magnitude quake, with power out for 10 minutes and the telephone network returning.

The interior ministry said authorities have mobilized resources to help affected areas.

Hospitals in Marrakesh saw a “massive influx” of injured people, and the regional blood transfusion center in Marrakesh has called on residents to donate blood. A family was trapped in the rubble after their house collapsed in Al-Haouz.
